CBD Oil and Your Pet: What It Can – and Can’t Do

Dog taking essential oil from dropper. Nutritional supplements, calming products, cbd or thd oils for pets

Your pup or cat means the world to you and seeing your companion struggle with ailments, anxiety or stress is difficult. Many Warfighter Hemp customers have felt success with CBD oil for themselves and began asking if it’s possible to create a CBD oil tincture formula for their pet. And it is! Warfighter Hemp’s new pet products come in delicious flavors that their humans can appreciate. We are happy to have worked with a veterinarian to help us formulate our newest CBD products for pets.

How Does CBD Affect Dogs?

First, to learn more about Cannabidoil, or CBD, please read our blog “What is CBD Oil?” At Warfighter Hemp, we don’t believe this is a passing fad, or a trend. In the beginning, our founder wanted a clean product to help veterans remove themselves from the toxic opioids given to them. As his mission grew, so did the Warfighter family.

Currently, there has been no formal study on how CBD affects pets. What scientists do know is that cannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid receptors located in the central and peripheral nervous systems, which help maintain balance in the body and keep it in a normal healthy state, much like with humans!

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a complex cell-signaling system identified in the early 1990s by researchers exploring Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a well-known cannabinoid. Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a non-psychoactive phytocannabinoids. Phytocannabinoids are chemical compounds found in hemp plants. Research shows significant potential for phytocannabinoids to support health & wellness. There are over 85 different phytocannabinoids (some say up to 200!) including the commonly known Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD).

Types of CBD Products for Your Pet

At Warfighter Hemp, we offer two methods of giving CBD oil to your pet: a Bacon Flavored 500 mg Full Spectrum CBD Oil and a Peanut Butter 250 mg Full Spectrum CBD Chew.

Calming and Relief Pet Treats
  1. Peanut Butter 250 mg Full Spectrum CBD Chew

Formulated by a veterinarian specific for joint support, these new Calming and Joint Support Pet Treats are peanut butter flavored. They also contain turmeric root, beneficial natural botanicals and full spectrum hemp extract. Warfighter Hemp customers tell us their furry friends love them!

The chews are a great alternative to giving pills or oils that your pet might associated with the dreaded doctor visit – or simply don’t like the taste. Many pets also have a difficult time swallowing pills and chews are usually associated with treats – so they’ll hopefully want more!

The one downside to administering CBD chews to your pet is that the dose can’t be incrementally adjusted (up or down), which provides less control than the oil tincture.

Bacon Flavor 500 mg Full Spectrum Pet CBD Oil

2. Bacon Flavored 500 mg Full Spectrum CBD Oil

Who wouldn’t like anything that’s bacon flavored? The new 500 mg CBD oil pet tincture brings back one of Warfighter Hemp’s most popular products, this time with a tasty twist. Most pets want to eat only tasty tidbits, therefore, it was paramount at Warfighter Hemp we offer our pet customers an option that their pets will eagerly ingest.

Warfighter Hemp’s pet CBD oil consists of a full spectrum extract that has been suspended in a carrier oil. We use hemp oil as a carrier oil for both our human tinctures and our pet tincture.

Advantages for a Pet CBD Oil Tincture

  • The CBD oil can be dispersed to pets using a measured dropper. This allows you to dose your pet much more accurately and adjust the dose (up or down) as often as needed.
  • If you can, administer the CBD oil either under your pet’s tongue, cheeks or in your pet’s mouth, so it has the potential to be absorbed more quickly through mucous membrane.
  • The CBD oil pet tincture can also be given to cats! Just keep in mind all tinctures’ dosages are based upon body weight. (See recommended chart below for dogs.) For cats, begin with an extremely low dose, and always consult with your veterinarian before giving the product.

Disadvantages for a Pet CBD Oil Tincture

  • Some pets don’t love the taste of plant material extract – which is why Warfighter Hemp added bacon-flavoring to our CBD oil for pets.
  • CBD oils in general are more difficult to travel with due to possible leakage.

When giving CBD oil to your pet, we recommend dropping it directly in their mouth (the preferred method) or you can put it in a treat or on top of their food. When dosing directly in a pet’s mouth, consider placing it on the side, up against your pet’s cheek, rather than directly on the tongue.

Potential Benefits of Giving CBD Oil to Your Pet

Hemp-derived CBD products for pets are still new in the veterinary space, so there’s not much for definitive scientific data on using CBD to treat dogs. There is, however, anecdotal evidence, especially from our Warfighter Hemp dog owners, and others suggesting it can treat pain, especially neuropathic pain, as well as helping to control seizures. Several Warfighter Hemp customers have told us how CBD oil has brought new life to their companion animals. Want to see these reviews for yourself? Simply visit Warfighter Hemp on TrustPilot and in the search bar, type “dog” or “pet.” All reviews related to that for our products will appear!

The AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) is sponsoring a study through the Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences to evaluate the use of CBD in treatment-resistant epileptic dogs. The CHF shares that it hopes this will be the first study to gain scientific data on the use of CBD in dogs with this condition

Is CBD Safe for Dogs and Cats?

According to a 2017 report by the World Health Organization, CBD and hemp oil is safe to use with dogs. Multiple veterinary studies published in the past two years have shown that, even when given high levels of CBD, pets experienced no major adverse effects (1) (2) (3).  CBD and hemp oil for dogs have positive effects on many areas of a canine’s body including jointsbones, skin, and brain function

CBD contains no intoxicating properties and will not get your pet high. However, CBD can influence brain activity in pets, which leads to some of the potential benefits, such as a reduction in stress and anxiety for dogs and cats.

It’s important to discuss dosage instructions with your veterinarian and to never experiment with products not created specifically for pets.

As more research is conducted, we will all gain more information regarding the effect of long-term use of CBD products in pets.

Every pet is different, and not all dogs and cats will see the same results from using CBD products. Talk to your veterinarian if you have any concerns or questions about how your pet is reacting to a specific product.

How much should you give?

The amount of CBD, measured in milligrams (mg), you should give your dog depends on many factors, including your pet’s weight, personal sensitivity to it, and whether you are giving it for behavioral problems, such as anxiety or for “illnesses” such as seizures. Dogs are more sensitive to CBD than humans, and so they typically need lower amounts. You should always start with a low serving size and then gradually build up to a higher amount if necessary, making sure your pup is able to tolerate it.

The AKC provided these guidelines:**

  • Pets less than 30 pounds – 8 mg per day
  • 30-60 pounds – 8-16 mg per day
  • 60-100 pounds – 16-24 mg per day
  • 100-150 pounds – up to 32 mg per day

Please contact your veterinarian if you think your pet might be having an adverse reaction of any kind.

Hemp-derived CBD products are legal for pets, assuming they meet the requirement of containing less than 0.3 percent of THC. Previously illegal to grow in the U.S., the 2018 Farm Bill legalized hemp production and gave the CBD industry a path for use and testing in the United States.

Helping Those Who Help Us

Like most of you, when it comes to dogs, we like to say that they’re not pets, they’re family, and you only give your family the best. Just like their humans, dogs—specifically, their endocannabinoid systems —can benefit from a full spectrum of naturally occurring cannabinoids as well.

Additionally, a portion of every Bacon Flavored CBD Pet Full Spectrum Oil and Peanut Butter Chew sale will go to help veteran charities that focus on our four-legged friends. Review our “Giving Back” page and you’ll see Semper K9 and Paws & Warriors listed.

We know there’s nothing you want more than to see your four-legged pal happy and healthy. That’s why our hemp extract is nurtured and tested for quality, from seed to shelf to you. High-quality hemp extracts, such as those from Warfighter Hemp, can help dogs maintain wellness, whether at rest or at play, by supporting the skin, cognition, and hips & joints of our four-legged friends, especially as they age.

* Warfighter Hemp always recommends reaching out to your veterinarian first before giving any CBD oil to your pet
